Check these warning signs first
Seek emergency medical help for new difficulty passing urine, loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the genitals or anus, or symptoms in both legs with weakness or numbness. Call 111 if you need emergency assistance.
New or worsening leg weakness also needs prompt medical assessment. Do not wait for a routine acupuncture appointment.
Does leg pain always mean sciatica?
No. Pain spreading into a leg can have different causes. The location, changes in sensation or strength, and what brings on symptoms help a clinician decide what needs checking.
An online symptom list cannot establish a diagnosis or tell you whether a particular treatment is suitable.
What should I tell the clinician?
Note which leg is affected, how far symptoms travel, whether there is numbness or weakness, and how sitting, walking or sleep are affected. Mention when it started and whether it followed an injury.
Bring any previous assessment, reports and relevant ACC details. New or worsening weakness changes the urgency of the next step, even if pain is not severe.
Can I keep active?
Once urgent concerns have been addressed, advice often includes staying active within your ability and gradually building activity rather than prolonged bed rest. The right pace depends on your symptoms and assessment.
Do not force a stretch that increases travelling pain or neurological symptoms. Ask for guidance rather than assuming every leg pain needs the same exercise.
How is care planned at your visit?
We first assess the pattern of leg pain, numbness and movement difficulties. Nyx can then discuss acupuncture, suitable hands-on care and activity advice around the specific tasks troubling you, such as sitting, walking, driving or sleeping.
Follow-up considers changes in symptoms and everyday function so the plan can be adjusted. New numbness, weakness or worsening symptoms need timely medical assessment.
